no big words

So the MHT Community Group now meets weekly to discuss the Word.  It was a nifty and organic move as those present just suggested – “Can we meet next week too?”.  Good Stuff.

Well, we are going through the book of 1 Corinthians one chapter at a time.  It is always a fun experience to read with a group because each person is seeing Read the rest of this entry »

less talk more rock

So this wonderful world wide web led me on a path to a pleasant surprise.

While researching the parable about “getting out of the boat” I stumbled across a blog called Never Get Out of the Boat.  What’s more is that the writer, Eaon Pritchard, had just reviewed the nifty little pocket guide: The Path of a Doer.

The free pdf preview includes some classic advice like:

* set a goal

* set a deadline

* don’t do it alone (sounds like rule #1)

* and expect obstacles …

obstacles …. things that make you go hmmm…

This was kind of a rabbit trail.  One with a refreshing lemonade stand at the end.  Now please excuse me why I find my way back to my original study 🙂

Why Resolve?

Everyone states New Year’s Resolution, right?  That is what we do.  It is like a tradition – so let’s go.

A popular quote that must have hit everyone’s inbox in 2010 by W.L. Bateman says “If you keep doing what you’ve always done, you’ll keep getting what you’ve always got”.

I am not sure who Mr. Bateman is or was but this seems to make sense.  Yep, so just like my own personal  Tyler Durden this web log may just be a fun tool for changing my life.  Not a drastic, superficial, or project mayhem type of change simple growth.

The first rule of my New Year’s Resolution List is to not do it alone.

The second rule of my New Year’s Resolution List is to not do it alone.

To “not do it alone” for each of the resolutions means there shall be planned accountability and divine intervention.

Accountability. A friend (or group of friends), mentors or positive peer pressure.

Friends are the ones that want to accomplish the same goal.  We will walk the walk and talk about it to make sure we are staying goal-oriented.

Mentors will count as someone is already where I want to be in that area and is willing to offer guidance.  Bonus points if I can call this person “friend”.

Positive Peer Pressure comes from declaring these goals openly and thus opening myself up to random inquiries.

Divine Intervention. So whether you are devout in your faith, a bit more passive or even just polite and traditional about it many of us “call on God”.  I have heard an atheist express sincere gratitude for a “God bless you” after a sneeze with “Thank you for the thought”.  Nevertheless since I do consider myself a Christ-follower I will be calling on Him for help.

This leads to Resolution #1: Read the entire Bible through in 2011.

It is pretty embarrassing to admit that although I have called myself a Christian for most of my life that I have not read the whole book.  So keeping with Rule#1 several friends have agreed to take up the challenge as well.

Youversion.com is a free site that offers quite a few reading plans (among other things) that you can customize and begin anytime during the year.

Well away we go. More later.

Mad Love,
